           Robotic Myomectomy (Fibroid Removal) Q & A

What is robotic myomectomy?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of the uterus in women of childbearing age.

While fibroids are very common, many remain small and don’t cause problems. However, some women will experience pelvic pain or other complications when a fibroid is large or obstructs reproductive organs.

Institute for Gynecology Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery offers robotic myomectomy, a computer-assisted surgical procedure to remove large or painful fibroids while leaving the uterus intact.

Dr. Asulin is a pioneer in robotic gynecologic surgeries, including myomectomy procedures. He uses da Vinci® robotic technologies to remove fibroids through very small incisions, so you can heal quickly and with fewer complications.

When should I consider robotic myomectomy?

You might be a candidate for robotic myomectomy if you have persistent symptoms related to fibroids that you can’t manage with medications or other nonsurgical therapies. These symptoms can include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Pelvic pain
  • Back pain
  • Infertility
  • Pain during sex

If a fibroid grows large enough, it can change the shape of your uterus and cause noticeable abdominal enlargement.

Because you keep your uterus after myomectomy, the procedure is appropriate for women who still plan to have children. If you’re done having children and have severe fibroid symptoms, Dr. Asulin may recommend a laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomy.

What happens during robotic myomectomy?

During your robotic myectomy at Institute for Gynecology Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery, you can expect to lay comfortably on an exam table. Dr. Asulin administers anesthesia to keep you comfortable and relaxed. He makes small incisions at your belly button, lower abdomen, and both hips to access fibroids.

The da Vinci system includes a set of robotic arms that Dr. Asulin controls throughout your procedure. The arms hold small surgical tools and a high-definition camera that fits through tiny incisions. The camera sends real-time, 3D images to a monitor, so Dr. Asulin gets a magnified view of the surgical site to remove targeted fibroids.

You may need to stay overnight in the hospital for observation. Dr. Asulin provides ongoing after-care to ensure your incisions heal properly. He also monitors your reproductive health to identify additional fibroids or other abnormal growths.
