           Pelvic Floor Repair Q & A

What is pelvic floor repair?

Pelvic floor repair, also called prolapse surgery, is a group of surgical procedures used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and restore the normal function and structure of the female pelvic organs.

During the da Vinci® Sacrocolpopexy procedure, Dr. Asulin typically uses mesh to hold the affected pelvic organ in the correct natural position.

Who needs pelvic floor repair?

Anyone with a prolapse, the abnormal protrusions of organs or other components, can potentially benefit. Prolapses occur most often due to issues after childbirth, whether related to stretch injuries, muscle injuries, or weakness.

However, while labor, pregnancy, and delivery often contribute to a prolapse, they’re not the only causes. Your risk is higher if you have chronic constipation, are overweight, or have a family history of weak connective tissues.

What symptoms indicate a need for pelvic floor repair?

Pelvic floor repair may help if you:

  • Have pelvic organ prolapse (such as bladder, uterine, or rectal prolapse)
  • Experience chronic discomfort or pressure in the pelvic region
  • Have urinary or fecal incontinence due to weakened pelvic muscles
  • Suffer from vaginal bulging or the sensation of something “falling out”
  • Experience sexual dysfunction or pain related to pelvic floor laxity
  • Have not responded to conservative treatments such as pelvic floor physical therapy or pessaries

Dr. Asulin may recommend surgery when your symptoms interfere with daily activities or quality of life, and nonsurgical options are no longer effective.

What can I expect from pelvic floor repair?

Before the surgery, Dr. Asulin performs a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical exam, imaging, urodynamic testing, and a review of your symptoms and medical history.

While anesthetized during the surgery, Dr. Asulin makes small incisions in your abdomen to repair the pelvic floor and support your internal organs. Once he completes the repair, he closes your incisions.

The procedure usually lasts 2–4 hours, depending on complexity, and you may need to remain under observation overnight. Recovery time varies, but you can generally expect:

  • 6–8 weeks of restricted activity
  • Mild to moderate discomfort, which you can manage with pain medication
  • Follow-up visits to address any concerns and monitor your healing

If you’re struggling with uncomfortable symptoms, don’t hesitate to speak with Dr. Asulin. Contact the Institute for Gynecology Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery today by phone or online to schedule your pelvic floor repair consultation.
