           Endometrial Ablation Q & A

What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding by removing or destroying the lining of your uterus (the endometrium). Since the lining is what sheds during your period, removing it significantly reduces (or sometimes stops) future bleeding.

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return home the same day. It doesn’t require major surgery or a long recovery time, making it an effective alternative to a hysterectomy if you want relief from heavy bleeding but wish to keep your uterus.

When should endometrial ablation be considered?

Dr. Asulin may recommend endometrial ablation if you experience unusually heavy menstrual bleeding that lasts longer than normal or interferes with your daily activities. You may also consider it if other treatments, such as medication or hormonal therapy, haven’t provided relief. The procedure is generally best suited for women who:

  • Have completed childbearing (pregnancy after ablation can be risky)
  • Experience chronic fatigue or anemia from heavy bleeding
  • Are looking for a long-term, nonsurgical solution to excessive periods

Before recommending ablation, Dr. Asulin conducts a thorough evaluation to ensure you don’t have any other underlying causes for your bleeding, such as fibroids, polyps, or cancer.

How does endometrial ablation work?

During endometrial ablation, Dr. Auline inserts a slender instrument through your vagina and cervix into your uterus. Using one of several techniques, such as heat, radiofrequency energy, freezing, or microwave energy, the device gently removes or destroys the endometrial tissue.

The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes and doesn’t require any incisions. Most patients experience mild cramping or watery discharge for a few days, but can resume normal activities within a day or two.

What are the benefits of endometrial ablation?

The main benefit of endometrial ablation is a dramatic reduction in menstrual bleeding. For many women, periods become much lighter or stop entirely. Other advantages include:

  • Quick recovery and minimal downtime
  • No need for long-term medication
  • Relief from anemia and fatigue
  • Improved quality of life

If heavy menstrual bleeding is affecting your well-being, relief is possible. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Asulin to learn if endometrial ablation is right for you. Call today or book online to start your journey toward comfort and confidence.
