           Adenomyosis Q & A

What is adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus (the endometrium) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. This misplaced tissue continues to act as it normally would — thickening, breaking down, and bleeding with each menstrual cycle — but because it is trapped within the uterine muscle, it can cause inflammation, enlargement of the uterus, and significant pain.

Adenomyosis most commonly affects women in their 30s and 40s, especially those who have had prior pregnancies, but it can occur at any reproductive age. The condition may range from mild to severe, and some women may not realize they have it until symptoms worsen.

What are the symptoms of adenomyosis?

Symptoms can vary in intensity, but many women with adenomyosis experience:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Severe menstrual cramps that worsen over time
  • Chronic pelvic pain or pressure
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen
  • Fatigue related to anemia from heavy bleeding

In some cases, adenomyosis can also contribute to fertility challenges, although many women with the condition are still able to conceive.

Is adenomyosis a serious condition?

Adenomyosis is not cancerous, but it can significantly impact your quality of life. Ongoing heavy bleeding may lead to anemia, while chronic pain can interfere with work, exercise, relationships, and daily activities.

Because symptoms can overlap with other gynecologic conditions such as fibroids or endometriosis, an accurate diagnosis is essential. Dr. Asulin uses advanced imaging and clinical evaluation to determine the cause of your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan.

How is adenomyosis treated?

Treatment for adenomyosis depends on the severity of symptoms, your age, and your future fertility goals. At Institute for Gynecology Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery, care is individualized and may include:

  • Hormonal therapies to reduce bleeding and pain
  • Anti-inflammatory medications to manage discomfort
  • Minimally invasive procedures to address focal areas of adenomyosis
  • Robotic or laparoscopic surgery when conservative treatments are not effective
  • Hysterectomy in severe cases for women who have completed childbearing

Dr. Asulin prioritizes minimally invasive and robotic techniques whenever possible, helping reduce recovery time, minimize scarring, and improve overall outcomes.

If heavy bleeding, worsening cramps, or persistent pelvic pain are disrupting your life, you don’t have to manage it alone. Call the office or book your appointment online today.
